Half-An-Onion was built by a mom with ADHD, for families who need real help. Our core belief: if we don't have your data, no one can steal it. This policy explains exactly what we collect, why, and how you stay in control.
Half-An-Onion is a household productivity app operated by Half an Onion LLC, a Virginia Limited Liability Company doing business as Half-An-Onion. We are subject to the Virginia Consumer Data Protection Act (VCDPA) and comply with applicable federal law including COPPA and FTC requirements.

When you tap the microphone, your voice is streamed to Google Gemini API for transcription only. The audio file is deleted from your device's memory within seconds of the text being returned. We do not store, archive, log, or train on your voice recordings. Ever.
Google Gemini is configured on our API project to not use your data to improve their models. This setting is verified and maintained by Half an Onion LLC.
The text transcript (e.g. "pick up milk") is saved to your device's local SQLite database. It is not sent to our servers unless you specifically enable household sync.
Half-An-Onion may request your device location to identify nearby grocery stores for price comparison (Pro feature). Location is used for a single search request and immediately discarded. We do not store your location history, log your movements, or associate your location with your account. You may deny location permission and manually enter a ZIP code instead.
Half-An-Onion is designed for users 13 and older. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. Our sign-up flow includes an age verification step. If a user under 13 attempts to create an account, they are blocked and directed to ask a parent or guardian to add them as a Gardener instead.
If you believe a child under 13 has created an account, please contact us immediately at admin@halfanonion.app. We will delete the account and all associated data promptly.
The Free tier of Half-An-Onion displays banner advertisements through Google AdMob. Optional rewarded video ads are available to unlock additional voice captures. We do not share your task, grocery, or personal data with advertisers. The Pro tier is completely ad-free.
As a Virginia-based company, we comply with the VCDPA. You have the following rights:
To exercise any right, email admin@halfanonion.app with subject "VCDPA Request." We will respond within 45 days.
We are honest about our security posture. Here is what is and is not true:
Local data (tasks, lists, recipes, Gardeners) lives on your device and is retained until you delete it or use Delete Everything in Settings. Server data (email, sync IDs, subscription status) is retained until you delete your account. When you use Delete Everything, all server-side data is purged within 24 hours.
We will provide at least 14 days notice of material changes via in-app notification. The updated policy will be posted at halfanonion.app/privacy with a new effective date. Continued use after the effective date constitutes acceptance.
